We believe buildings are the bridge to a more prosperous and sustainable future. By making our buildings smarter and more efficient, we can achieve 100 percent clean energy in time to make a difference. By making our buildings more resilient, we can bounce back from disasters more quickly. By making our buildings healthier, we can improve people’s lives.

We know this is true, and we know this work is necessary. So why isn’t it happening? The short answer is, it’s complicated. The slightly longer answer is, without strong policy — based in science, and informed by an understanding of realities on the ground — the market is too fragmented, too disorganized, too distracted to move.

That is why I founded Sustento Group — to accelerate decarbonization of the built environment by bridging environmental policy with commercial real estate objectives. For over a decade we’ve been on the front lines, working with a diverse set of clients — from federal, state, and local governments, to global banks and asset managers, utilities, advocates, national labs, and affordable housing developers — identifying barriers, and developing solutions to move the market at scale.
