President Biden and Vice President Harris ran on the most ambitious climate-change platform in history, a campaign calling for nothing short of a “clean energy revolution and environmental justice.” Rather than go back to business as usual, the Biden administration promises to “build back better” to ensure a livable planet for our children.

This does not mean we should relax and wait for the federal government to act. The science is clear: We must cut global emissions 7.5 percent each year for the next decade if we expect to recognize the world we will be living in 20 years from now. Every year we wait—every day—the job gets harder.

It’s time for radical collaboration. It’s time for government, utilities, advocates and the private sector to come together and accelerate adoption of solutions that make our communities healthier, more resilient, more equitable, and more prosperous as we decarbonize the economy.

At our current pace, it will take 60 years to retrofit the nation’s existing commercial building stock, according to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy We don’t have that much time.

In the words of the U.N. Secretary General, we have “ten years to transform our world.” We have the technology. We have the expertise. We have the capital. It’s time to step forward into a decade of climate action.

For governments, that means enacting strong policies, and offering incentives that leverage private markets to deliver environmental and social outcomes at a pace and scale never seen before.

For real estate owners, that means advocating for enabling legislation, leading by example and making smart investments to protect and enhance asset values.
